How to Stop Linen From Wrinkling
You Cannot, and Three Things to Do Instead

The honest answer disappoints people, and then saves them a great deal of ironing.

How to Stop Linen From Wrinkling Completely

You cannot, and you should not try. Linen creases because its fibre is stiff and the weave is open, which is the same property that makes it breathe. Removing the crease means removing the cooling. What you can do is control where it creases and how it reads, and that comes down to fit, drying method and blend.

The distinction that matters is between a crease and a crumple. A crease follows the lines the body makes: the elbow, the seat, the front of the hip. A crumple is fabric collapsing on itself with no relation to the body, and it is almost always caused by a garment that is too large or has been tumble dried.

The Three Things That Actually Work

One. Hang it damp. Take the shirt out of the machine while still wet, shake it once, and hang it on a wide hanger. The weight of the water pulls the fibres straight as it dries, which removes about 80% of the creasing with no effort at all. This single habit does more than everything else combined.

Two. Never tumble dry. Heat and tumbling set hard creases into linen that no amount of pressing fully removes. It is the main cause of permanently crumpled linen, and it is entirely avoidable.

Three. Buy the right fit. Linen cut close through the shoulder and chest creases along the body; oversized linen collapses into folds. Sizing is covered in full in how a linen shirt should fit, and our linen shirts are cut for it.

  • Wash at 30 degrees, gentle cycle, no fabric softener
  • Hang damp on a wide hanger, never on a thin wire one
  • Skip the dryer entirely, every time
  • If pressing, do it damp and on the reverse at medium heat
  • Hang rather than fold for storage, so the shoulder keeps its line

The same rules apply to a linen tee, which creases less only because there is less of it.

What About Wrinkle Resistant Blends?

They work, and they cost you the reason you bought linen. A blend at 50% polyester creases noticeably less and breathes noticeably worse, which in July is the wrong trade. Below 70% linen the fabric stops behaving like linen at all.

A better compromise is weight. Heavier linen at 200 grams and above creases less than a fine 120 gram cloth and drapes better, at the cost of some coolness. That is a genuine trade rather than a false one. For trousers specifically, a heavier linen holds its line far longer through a day, which is why our linen trousers are cut in the heavier weights. FAQs

Can you iron linen flat?

You can, and it lasts about forty minutes. Pressing linen to a sharp finish removes the texture that made it worth wearing and the creases return the moment you sit down. If you must press, do it while damp on the reverse at medium heat, and accept that it is temporary.

Does linen crease less after several washes?

Yes, noticeably. Linen softens over roughly the first thirty washes as the fibres break down slightly, and softer fibres crease into gentler folds. A three year old linen shirt looks better crumpled than a new one does, which is why the fabric rewards being kept.

Manage It, Do Not Fight It

Hang it damp, keep it out of the dryer, and buy it in your actual size. Those three habits cost nothing and turn linen from a fabric that looks slept in into one that looks lived in, which was always the point of it.

A crease is the fabric working.
A crumple is the fit failing.
