Wear it over a collared shirt with the zip open about a third of the way, letting the collar sit outside the neckline. That single arrangement covers the office, the weekend and travel. Over a plain tee it becomes casual, and under a jacket it replaces a waistcoat without adding bulk.
The zip position is the whole trick. Fully closed reads as sportswear. Fully open reads as undecided. A third open frames the shirt collar and gives the neckline a shape, which is why the piece works at all.
The Three Ways to Wear It
Office. Over an Oxford or poplin shirt, tucked into a tailored trouser, zip a third open with the collar out. This is the closest a knit gets to business dress, and in most workplaces it replaces a jacket entirely. Pair it with grey or navy from our trousers.

Which Colour to Buy First
Beige or oatmeal. It works over white, blue and striped shirts, and under navy, brown and olive outerwear, which is more combinations than any other shade. Navy is the second buy and reads slightly more formal. Brown is the third and the most seasonal.

Should a quarter zip be tucked in?
Only over a tucked shirt, in an office setting, with a trouser that has a proper waistband. Everywhere else it stays out. A tucked knit over jeans or chinos reads as trying too hard, and most quarter zips are cut with a straight hem that is not designed for it.
Can you wear a tie with a quarter zip?
No. The placket and the tie compete for the same space and neither wins. If the occasion needs a tie, wear a fine gauge crew neck or a waistcoat instead. The quarter zip is a no-tie piece, which is most of its appeal.
