What Is Smart Casual for Men?
A Collar, a Trouser, a Leather Shoe

The most used and least defined dress code in Britain, reduced to three requirements.

What Is Smart Casual for Men, in Practice?

A collar, a tailored trouser and a leather shoe. That is the whole definition. Smart casual sits above casual, which permits a tee and a trainer, and below business dress, which expects a jacket and often a tie. If an outfit has all three elements it satisfies the code; if it is missing one, it does not.

The code exists because most invitations need to exclude two things without naming them: sportswear and full tailoring. Everything written into a smart casual dress code is an attempt to say that politely, which is why the wording is always vague and the expectation rarely is.

The Three Requirements

  • A collar: an Oxford shirt, a linen shirt or a polo with a collar that holds its shape
  • A tailored trouser: chino, gurkha or flannel, with a clean hem and a proper waistband
  • A leather shoe: loafer, derby or chelsea boot, never a trainer

A fourth element is optional and moves the outfit upward: a fine knit or an unstructured jacket over the collar. That is the difference between passing the code and being the best dressed person who passes it. Our shirts, trousers and loafers cover all three requirements.

The Code Shifts by Setting

In an office, smart casual leans upward: a shirt rather than a polo, and a knit or jacket most days. At a restaurant or a private members club it means the same three elements with more room on colour. At a wedding described as smart casual it almost always means a jacket, whatever the invitation says.

The safest reading is to satisfy the three requirements and add the optional fourth when the setting is unfamiliar. Being marginally overdressed passes without comment; the reverse does not. The weekend end of this register is covered in old money casual outfits, and the wardrobe behind it in our guide to what old money style is.

FAQs

Are jeans smart casual?

At the casual end, and only in plain dark denim with no distressing and a clean hem. Many offices accept them; most restaurants and clubs do not. If the setting is unfamiliar, a chino or flannel trouser removes the question entirely for the same money.

Can you wear trainers with smart casual?

Generally no. The leather shoe is the requirement most consistently enforced, because footwear signals the register more clearly than anything above it. A plain white leather trainer passes in some creative workplaces and almost nowhere else.

Three Things, Then Judgement

Collar, trouser, leather shoe. Every smart casual invitation you will ever receive is asking for those three, and the vagueness of the wording is politeness rather than flexibility.
