What Is the Ivy League Look?
The American Half of the Old Money Wardrobe
Most of what we now call old money style came out of four American campuses between 1920 and 1965.
What Is the Ivy League Look, Precisely?
The Ivy League look is a soft tailored American style built around the natural shoulder sack jacket, the oxford cloth button down shirt, flat front chinos and loafers. It emerged on north eastern university campuses in the 1920s, peaked around 1960, and supplied most of the vocabulary that quiet luxury and preppy dress still use today.
The defining trait is softness. Where British tailoring structures the shoulder with padding and canvas, the Ivy jacket has almost none, so it follows the body rather than reshaping it. That single construction choice is what makes the whole look read as unfussy.
The Six Defining Pieces
- The sack jacket: natural shoulder, three roll two buttoning, no waist suppression
- The oxford cloth button down shirt, worn with a soft unlined collar roll
- Flat front chinos or grey flannels, cuffed, with a light break
- Penny loafers, worn hard, or white canvas shoes in summer
- A shetland or cashmere crew neck, often worn over the shirt collar
- A repp stripe tie, knotted small, or no tie at all
Nothing on that list has changed since 1960, which is the strongest argument for it. Our knitwear and loafers carry the same shapes.
Ivy, Preppy and Old Money
Ivy is the original and the most restrained. Preppy is its louder descendant from the 1980s, with brighter colour, visible logos and more pattern. Old money style is the broader umbrella, absorbing Ivy on the American side and country house dress on the British one.
In practice a wardrobe built on Ivy principles satisfies the old money register almost entirely, minus the tailoring formality. If you want the full definition, see our guide to what old money style is, and for the American softness applied to modern tailoring, our old money suit guide. Pair the pieces with plain trousers and an oxford shirt.
FAQs
Is Ivy League style still wearable?
Entirely, and more so than most twentieth century styles, because the pieces were designed around comfort rather than silhouette. A button down oxford, a crew neck and loafers read as contemporary in any British city. What dates the look is only the tie width and the jacket length.
What is the difference between Ivy and preppy?
Volume. Ivy is the restrained 1950s original in muted colour with no visible branding. Preppy is its 1980s revival with brighter shades, larger logos and more pattern. Both share the same pieces; only the loudness changed.

Sixty Years, Unchanged
The Ivy League look has survived because it was never designed to be noticed. Soft shoulders, natural fibres, and a set of pieces that combine with each other in any order. It is the American ancestor of everything on this site.
It was never a fashion.
That is why it never went out of one.
