What to Wear to a Country Club as a Guest
A collared shirt, tailored trousers and leather shoes. That combination satisfies the dress code at almost every country club in Britain, whether the visit is lunch, tennis or a drink on the terrace. Add a jacket if the dining room is formal. Avoid denim, trainers, visible logos and anything above the knee.
The written codes are short because they assume shared knowledge. When a club says smart casual it means a collar and a proper shoe, not a smart t-shirt. When it says no sportswear it includes performance fabrics, however expensive. Reading the code literally is how guests get turned away at the door.
It Depends Which Part of the Club
Terrace and casual dining. A polo or a linen shirt with stone or navy trousers, loafers, no socks in summer. This is the most common setting and the most forgiving.
Formal dining room. A jacket, almost always, and a tie in the older clubs. Navy blazer with grey or stone trousers is the safest thing a guest can wear anywhere in Britain, and a full suit is never wrong.
Tennis and golf. Club-specific and usually strict: whites for tennis at traditional clubs, a collar and tailored shorts or trousers for golf. Never assume, and never arrive in the kit you would wear to a public court. What Gets You Turned Away
- Denim of any colour, including dark and unripped
- Trainers, including leather ones that look like dress shoes
- Visible logos, slogans and sports branding
- Shorts above the knee, and athletic shorts at any length
- Untucked shirts in a formal dining room, whatever the cut
One further rule that is never written: as a guest, dress a half step above what you expect the members to wear. Being slightly overdressed passes unremarked. Being underdressed is the only version anybody remembers.

Can you wear shorts to a country club?
Tailored shorts at knee length are acceptable on the terrace and the golf course at most clubs, and almost never in the dining room. Athletic shorts are excluded everywhere. If shorts are worn, pair them with a collared shirt and a proper shoe rather than a trainer.
Do you need a jacket at a country club?
For the formal dining room, usually yes, and many clubs keep spare jackets at the door for guests who arrive without one. For the terrace, bar or sporting facilities, no. If the visit includes dinner, bring one regardless: it is far easier to remove a jacket than to find one.
