A plain tee is the hardest garment to buy well, because every shortcut shows. Old money t-shirts earn their place through fabric weight, a neckband that keeps its shape, and a body cut close without clinging. Get those three right and a tee sits comfortably under a jacket instead of undermining it.
Weight and weave: linen, ribbed cotton and cashmere
Old money t-shirts divide by cloth before anything else. Linen is the coolest option and the only one that improves as it relaxes, so it is the summer default. Ribbed cotton has visible structure and holds its shape, reading more deliberate than a flat jersey. Cashmere and fine merino give the softest hand at a price that only makes sense if you wear it often. A beige linen tee covers most of August on its own.
Crew, V and henley: what each neckline does
A crew neck is the neutral choice and the only one that works cleanly under a jacket. A V neck opens the chest and suits a shorter neck, though a deep V tips into a different register entirely. A henley adds a placket and two or three buttons, which gives a plain tee some of the authority of a collar. A navy henley bridges the gap between the tee and your shirts.
Fit, layering and wearing old money t-shirts well
The sleeve should end mid bicep and the hem should fall just past the belt line, long enough to stay tucked but short enough to leave out. Shoulder seams sit on the shoulder, never below. Under a fine knit or over tailored trousers, a plain tee holds its own; a white ribbed tee with the tailored trousers is a summer uniform.
T-shirt questions, answered
Can a t-shirt look smart enough for a jacket?
Yes, provided the fabric has weight and the neckline is intact. A fine ribbed or linen tee under an unstructured jacket reads as deliberate, particularly in warm weather. A thin jersey tee with a stretched neck undermines whatever is worn over it.
What colours should a t-shirt wardrobe cover?
White, navy, grey and one earth tone such as olive or beige handle almost everything. These sit under every jacket and knit in a neutral wardrobe. Anything brighter competes with the layer above and limits how often the piece gets worn.
How do you stop a neckline from stretching?
Never hang a tee by the shoulders on a narrow hanger, and fold it instead. Wash cool and dry flat or on a low heat, since hot drying is what destroys the ribbed neckband. A double stitched neckband lasts considerably longer than a single one.
Should a linen tee be worn tucked or untucked?
Untucked in most situations, since the fabric is designed to drape and a tuck fights that. Tuck it only when the trouser has a high rise and a clean waistband, where the effect is intentional. A half tuck belongs to a different aesthetic altogether.
Are henleys more formal than a plain crew neck?
Slightly, because the placket and buttons give the eye something structural to read. A henley worn with the top button open sits comfortably between a tee and an open collared shirt. It is not, however, a substitute for a shirt under a suit.
How should a t-shirt fit across the chest?
Close enough to follow the body without pulling at the seams or showing every detail beneath. You should be able to pinch two or three centimetres of fabric at the side. Anything tighter reads as gym wear and anything looser loses the line entirely.
