What Trousers to Wear With Loafers
The Hem Decides It, Not the Colour
A loafer is the most exposed shoe in the wardrobe. Whatever sits above it is doing half the work.
What Trousers to Wear With Loafers, and How Long
A tailored trouser with a hem that breaks once, lightly, or stops just above the shoe. Grey, stone, navy and olive all work; the colour matters far less than the length. Too long and the hem buries the shoe, which removes the reason for wearing a loafer. Too short and the outfit dates itself to a particular decade.
The loafer has no laces and a low vamp, which means the top of the foot is visible in a way it is not with an oxford. That visibility is the point of the shoe, and a pooling hem cancels it entirely. Hem length is therefore the single decision that matters here.
Which Cut, by Season
- Pleated trousers: the most versatile, autumn through spring, in grey or stone
- Gurkha trousers: the dressiest pairing, and the waistband shows well with a tucked shirt
- Linen trousers: summer only, with a slightly shorter hem and no sock
- Flannel: winter, in mid grey, with a full break and a leather sole
- Chinos: acceptable at the casual end, provided the leg is not tapered tight
What fails is the skinny leg. A narrow taper ending above a wide loafer vamp makes the shoe look oversized and the leg look thin, which is the most common failed pairing. Keep the leg opening between 17 and 19 centimetres. Our trousers are cut in that range.
Hem, Socks and the Gap
In summer, with no visible sock, shorten the hem so it just misses the shoe and shows one to two inches of ankle deliberately. In autumn and winter, wear a sock that matches the trouser rather than the shoe, and let the hem break once on the vamp. A leather sole handles that season better than a suede one.
The failure state is a middle position: a hem that half covers the shoe with a slice of white sock showing. That reads as an oversight rather than a choice. Decide which version you are wearing and commit to the hem length that goes with it. FAQs
Can you wear jeans with loafers?
Plain dark denim with a clean hem and a straight leg, yes. Distressed or light wash denim fights the formality of the shoe and the pairing reads as unresolved. If the jeans are tapered tight at the ankle, the loafer will look oversized and a boot is the better choice.
Should trousers touch the shoe with loafers?
Once, lightly, or not at all. A single soft break on the vamp is correct in autumn and winter with a sock. In summer without a sock, a hem that stops just above the shoe is better, since it shows the ankle deliberately rather than accidentally.

Pay the Tailor, Not the Shop
Almost every trouser in this article works with a loafer once the hem is right, and almost none of them work at the length they arrive in. Fifteen pounds at a tailor decides more than the choice of trouser did.
The shoe is chosen in the shop.
The outfit is decided at the hem.
